Assistant Teacher collaboration form
Purpose of the ESL Assistant Teacher role: being an ESL Teacher(s) requires training and experience. The role of Assistant Teacher provides an on-ramp. Some of the benefits of this role include:
-
Like Christ’s example of how He mentored / modeled ministry for His disciples before He asked them to do it.
-
Flexible responsibilities for the Assistant Teacher… from little more than an Observer all the way to many tasks that Teacher(s) would do.
-
Flexible timeline… it allows the Assistant Teacher to grow and assume responsibility at a pace they and the Teacher(s) are comfortable with.
-
Can help to relieve the Teacher(s) of some of the workload (though do note that the Assistant Teacher is not just a dumping ground for anything the Teacher(s) don’t want to do.
-
Allows volunteers to contribute to teaching who are not available consistently enough to be a full Teacher.
-
Allows for the Assistant Teacher to get to know the student and therefore have the relationship load to be shared by more than just the Teacher(s)
Purpose of this form: Although the role has a lot of potential, it is also possible for this ministry partnership to go awry, either through the Assistant Teacher being neglected or not following well. This can be avoided with a little bit of intentionality and communication on the part of both the Teacher(s) and the Assistant Teacher.
Who should take initiative for this form: both should take ownership for laying a good foundation for this ministry partnership. Don’t wait for the other person to schedule a time to talk and pray about it together.
Who should receive this form: please share this form with the School Leader when you’re done.
Note: it is important that both Teachers (if there are two) be a part of this planning and communication process, even if only one meets with the Assistant Teacher to go over it.
