Devotion Time
-
Hi Mary Lynn,
-
We prayed for you about your devotions time after you mentioned the need to me. How has it been going the last couple weeks? -Jonathan
-
Thanks to all of you! We reviewed some characteristics of God we had covered earlier and that made sense to them. Now we’re approaching some salvation verses (they’re alphabet verses): O (Jesus and the Father are One), P(Praise the Lord all you nations), Q(Your iniQuities have separated you from God), R (Repent and turn to God), S(Jesus Saves us from our Sins). Over the next few weeksplease pray for the Holy Spirit to be the guide in sharing these ideas and Scriptures and for them to be open to hearing and considering them.

Conversation with Bruno concenning with the Bible.
-
Hi brothers,
-
Hope you had an encouraging time last night… I appreciate your ministry to Larissa, Zainab, Bruno, & Sumang. I wanted to tell you an encouraging update about Bruno. When I gave him a ride to his apartment last night, we got talking about the bible that you had given him. He said he had a friend back in Chile that became a Protestant Christian and was very zealous. During that time he (Bruno) read some of the bible. Then he shared with me some of his concerns about the bible. I was sad that he has them… but of course it’s very natural as a non-Christian. I tried to focus conversation more on Christ so I asked him what he thought of Christ. I got the impression he thinks that all gods are the same and that Christ is the Christian version of getting to heaven. So I told him Christ had actually spoken on that in John 14:6 and encouraged him to read it. Would you pray for him that his eyes will be opened and his heart softened as he’s looking at scripture? I do not want to get in the way of your personal ministry to him and I don’t have the capacity to care for every ESL student we have, but I thought that hearing this would encourage you and also give you more insight as you are shepherding him.

First, I want to thank you for a delightful ride to ESL Thursday evening. The food was out of this world and the conversation with an adult male Christian was so welcome. I just wish that you would have let me pay for my or our meal because you went out of your way, soiled your clothes and had to go home again to change. You are a great guy. Now about Bruno….I really appreciate your reinforcement with him concerning the Bible and faith in Jesus. I will be praying and trusting that he will come to faith no matter who is involved. I would like to pursue our conversation about leadership and shepherding with ESL men.

Travel time during ESL for Family Matters.

Hi y’all,
-
My mom’s twin who lives in Virginia is not doing well and the family has been called in to say goodbye. Thankfully, she’s a believer (her and her husband are also Link supporters). So we’re on the road right now and plan to be back this weekend.
-
We’ve tried to set up tomorrow evening’s ESL school for success and you of course have Beth as your Evening School Leader so you may not even notice my absence. But please leave a little extra margin in your eveningso you can support Beth and one another. And as always, the Lord is our strength and hope, so just lean on Him and all will be well.

Crystal & I are thinking of y’all and praying for y’all.

Hi Teachers,
-
Let me piggyback on Jonathan’s email to remind you all of some resources for the devotion portion of your lessons. Since students don’t come for a Bible lesson, they come for English instruction, we only want to spend about 5 minutes or so on the devotion but we do want them to know about the hope that we have. And school is held in a church.
-
Some teachers like to select a Bible verse and talk about the vocabulary words. I suggest you use a translation of Scripture like the Good News Translation. This translation is good for unchurched English speakers, children and English learners. We often don’t think about how crazy Bible words sound to people unfamiliar with them. You can find the Good News Translation on pretty much any Bible translation app. I use YouVersion on my smartphone. I use BibleHub or BibleStudyTools usually. You should also print out copies of your verse in your students first language.
-
Some teachers like to talk through a chapter or book of the Bible – a few verses at the time, of course. You can search online for “Bible devotions for adult ESL.” Mission to North America of teh PCA ESL Ministries has Bible studies and many other Bible resources on their website. (They also include resources for talking about holidays.) Here is the link to their webpage.
-
One of my favorite sites is The Bible Project. This is a nonprofit that makes animated videos about the Bible and Bible topics. They are brilliant and many videos are translated to other languages. Their website is here: https://bibleproject.com/. You can explore their YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bible+project.
-
If you do use videos or online resources, there are TVs in each classroom that make it easy to show content on your computer. Talk to me or Jonathan and we can show you how to do that. Let me know if you have any questions.

Blessings,
