Purpose statement

Sometimes new international friends express interest in studying the bible and we just need someone to patiently look at scripture with them. They may want to look at scripture as an end in itself or they may be interested in or open to using the bible to learn English. Your goal is to lead a one on one or small group bible discussion in English, for one or more of our international friends who is interested in both the bible and English improvement.

Summary of goals

  • If you are approved for this role, we have curriculum suggestions and equipping we would provide.
  • Pray for the Lord to prepare you for the person or people He has for you (it is most likely that you would need to get ready and then wait and pray for one or more to study with to be matched to you).
  • Be prepared for someone who does not speak much English
  • Facilitate bible reading (if low level English learner) or small group bible study

Details

Here’s one way to have an ESL Bible reading time with a very early level learner (of your same gender, of course)…

  • Prayer (before you connect with the international)
    • Yourself be in prayer for God’s to match you with the right international for you and for them.
    • Find someone who will support you in prayer regularly (daily, ideally). This is spiritual warfare. Expect opposition.
  • When you’re with them
    • Pray at some point during your time with them so they can see dependance on God for understanding modeled.
    • Just read stories from the life of Jesus
    • Use the NIrV (New Int’l Reader’s Version), as it’s one of the simplest levels of English available in a Bible
    • Have them copy your reading of the passage.
    • Repetition is your friend.
    • Use simple questions to check for comprehension.
    • One new word each meeting.

There are many other ESL Bible study resources on the PCA MNA ESL website.
